Der Name wurde aus dem griechischen „apatein“, was so viel wie täuschen bedeutet, abgeleitet. In der griechischen Mythologie war Apate, die Göttin der Täuschung, des Betruges und der Gaunerei, eine der bösen Geister, die aus der Büchse der Pandora befreit wurden. Einer der Gründe für diese Namensgebung sind sicher die zahlreichen Farben, in denen der Apatit vorkommt. Er wurde früher oft schlicht für einen anderen Edelstein gehalten, z.B. sieht ein königsblauer oder dunkelblauer Apatit einem blauen Saphir sehr ähnlich. Es gab aber auch Verwechselungen mit Turmalinen, Peridots und Beryllen. Allerdings fristete dieser Edelstein in der Vergangenheit eher ein Schattendasein in der Schmuck- und Edelsteinwelt.
