Context
This lithograph, entitled "El Kab (Elethyia)", is an exceptional work by Charlin, depicting a bas-relief carved on one of the faces of the main cave. It is a proof engraving on laid paper of plate 68 of the first volume of the monumental work "Description of Egypt", with a later support sheet.
The work "Description of Egypt":
Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte, this colossal work was completed between 1802 and 1830 and published between 1809 and 1828. Only a thousand copies were distributed to various institutions, printed on laid paper with a watermark "Ancient and Modern Egypt." Subtitled "Collection of observations and research made in Egypt during the expedition of the French Army," this encyclopedia is the first in the world to be exclusively devoted to the remains of ancient Egypt.
