Lega-Völker.
In den Wäldern der Demokratischen Republik Kongo entsteht Kunst vor allem für halbgeheime Vereinigungen von Männern und Frauen, wie zum Beispiel die Bwami-Gesellschaft der Lega-Völker. Die Lehren von Bwami durchdringen alle Aspekte des Lebens, leiten die moralische Entwicklung des Einzelnen und regeln die Beziehungen zu anderen. Die Bwami-Lehre wird durch Masken, Köpfe und kleine Figuren aus Holz und Elfenbein repräsentiert, die alle eine wichtige Rolle bei der Einweihung in die höchsten Klassen der Gesellschaft spielen. Obwohl die Form einfach ist, verkörpern diese geschnitzten Objekte komplexe und vielfältige Bedeutungen, die durch Sprichwörter, Sketche und Tänze verdeutlicht werden. Die Masken beziehen sich auf Vorfahren und werden als Symbole der Kontinuität von einer Generation von Eingeweihten an die nächste weitergegeben. Für die Lega sind körperliche Schönheit und moralische Exzellenz untrennbar miteinander verbunden.
