Buffon and Daubenton’s Œuvres de Buffon: Oiseaux, an illustrated edition (Tome VI) of 1839 published by Furne et Cie, in half green morocco binding, 732 pages, original French language, covering natural history, animals and ornithology.
Description from the seller
Beautiful illustrated edition of this superb masterpiece of French natural history, the result of collaboration between Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, and Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton, which enriches the text with precise anatomical descriptions.
The volume is devoted to describing numerous species, often grouped by natural affinities rather than by a strictly Linnaean classification, which testifies to Buffon’s conception of nature as a living continuum rather than as a fixed system -
The birds are presented there in their relationships with humans, their usefulness, their symbolism and their place in the natural economy, which gives the work a dimension that is both scholarly and cultural.
