Coimbra - Platter - faience - Coimbra

Decorative faience dish from Portugal (Coimbra), produced in the 19th century in a historicizing style, inspired by 17th-century examples.
The dish is richly decorated in cobalt blue on white tin glaze, with in the center a fantastic animal (lion-like mythological creature), surrounded by stylized floral and foliate motifs. The broad, scalloped rim is completely painted with floral ornaments.
Back of the item with a later designation “Coimbra – Portugal – séc. XVII”, which refers to the historical model, not the production date. This kind of marking is typical for 19th-century production and collecting context.
