Afghan - Rug - 125 cm - 50 cm - Old Afghan Saddle Bag

-----DESCRIPTION----- Saddle bags were traditional used by nomadic people for transporting their goods and possessions. They feature two decorative pouches with closing systems either side of a bridge. The saddle bags are sometimes known as Khorjin or Heybe. Saddle bags are woven in one continuous piece and when taken off the loom the two ends are folded back and sewn-up on the sides. The central section is the connecting panel (this can be short or long) that allows the two bags to be carried over the back of the nomad’s animal and holds the two bags together. The Khorjins can be sealed as they often have slits near the upper edge of each face side and loops on the back side. The loops can be pulled through the slits and then through one another thereby sealing the bag. (Sometimes khorjins do not have a closing system). Saddle bags are fascinating items, with a huge amount of work and skill in their creation. They are a versatile and interesting item for the home: perfect for use as a wall hanging, tribal wall art, hang over a banister and use as decorative storage or even as a floor cushion. Title: Old Afghan Saddle Bag Size: 50 cm x 125 cm Origin: Uzbek, Afghanistan. Technique: Handwoven; interlocking flat-weave. Material: Wool on wooll Colours and Design: This old Afghan Saddle Bag has a geometric diamond design. It has mature colour combinations of purples, gold, beige and dark blue. The reverse shows three sections of pattern along with expanses of a plain natural wool colour with natural bands of subtle colour variations.
