Attributed to Friedel/Friedhelm Bakalowits, this mid‑century modern crystal glass ceiling pendant lamp from Austria measures 40 cm high and 13.5 cm in width and depth, weighs 3256 g, is in working order, and remains in good condition with some light signs of age.
Description from the seller
This exceptionally elegant and rare pendant lamp is attributed to Friedel/Friedhelm Bakalowits. The legendary Austrian manufacturer Bakalowits & Söhne from Vienna, which since 1845 has been known as a court supplier and pioneer in luxurious crystal lighting. In the 1950s and 1960s, Bakalowits developed a revolutionary new formal language, in which traditional crystal was combined with modernist architecture — and this impressive lamp hails from precisely that period.
The lamp is composed of 24 square, faceted crystal blocks of high-quality crystal, carefully mounted in a sleek chrome-plated or nickel-plated frame. The crystals are not decorative, but optically cut to break and project the light. When the lamp is lit, a fascinating play of light, shadow, and rainbow reflections appears on the surrounding walls and ceiling—a typical feature of the high-quality Bakalowits fixtures from this period.
With a height of no less than 40 cm, this piece ranks among the larger architectural versions that were used at the time in luxury apartments, hotels, stairwells, and design interiors. This size was seldom produced for the private market and is today highly sought after among collectors of Mid-Century Modern and Space-Age design lighting.
The design aligns with iconic designers and brands such as Sciolari, Kalmar, and Kinkeldey, but Bakalowits stood in the top tier due to its exceptional crystal quality and finish. This lamp is not standard vintage lighting, but a modernist light object with sculptural and almost architectural appeal.
Dimensions: H 40 cm x W 13.5 cm x D 13.5 cm
Weight: 3256 grams
This vintage item is authentic with minimal patina and historical layering—carefully curated with a keen eye for detail. It will be securely packaged for smart shipping and sent by registered mail with insurance.
