Description from the seller
Works
Brussels, Louis Hauman and Company, 1829-30. (Bound)
Jeremy Bentham
Three volumes of 24 cm. each, pages (6) 581 (1); (4), volume (1), 481 (1); (6), iv, 362 (4).
3 plates outside the text on page 333 of the Third Volume and 4 large perspective plates, folded multiple times, full page. Beautiful woodcut vignettes on the frontispieces. Magnificent contemporary full leather binding with titles and rich gold tooling on the spine, marbled boards for the first 2 volumes; the third volume has a different binding, not contemporary.
Minimal signs of time on the bindings, sporadic and natural flowering, cut of the title page of the third volume.
Well preserved specimen.
Important collection of the main and best works of the great English jurist-philosopher (1748-1832), considered the leading proponent of utilitarian ideas, opposed to social contract theory; he fought against the historical conception of law by reaffirming the need for a definitive codification of the English legislative experience.
