Description from the seller
Frans van Bommel (Rotterdam 1939 - Heusden 2007)
For two months each year, he traveled by boat from Amsterdam to France. Along the way, he sketches the quays, the canals, and the landscape. His style was abstract, but he called these drawings and paintings hyper-realistic.
Van Bommel became known for his 'social actions' in public spaces. Together with local residents, he worked on murals aimed at brightening up disadvantaged neighborhoods. For example, he spent years creating seventy 'color projects' on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam, a construction site due to the metro line construction. Later, he made colorful murals in the Dapperbuurt and Rotterdam's Crooswijk. He also produced various commissioned works, such as a wall painting for the prison in Scheveningen and polyester reliefs for the Ministry of Social Affairs. In 1995, Van Bommel stopped working on commissions and focused on autonomous work, in which water played a central role.
Together with his wife Connie Bos, Van Bommel was a member of the Amsterdam city council for the Kabouterpartij for some time. He was also an Honorary Member of the Council for the Arts and an advisor to the Rijksgebouwendienst.
