This Japanese lantern dates to the Showa period and was designed for use both as a garden path lantern and as an interior room lantern. Its versatile form reflects traditional Japanese lighting used in domestic spaces and tea-related settings.
The lantern is constructed from cedar wood, featuring paper panels set within a simple square wooden frame. It consists of a removable wooden lid, a square lantern body, and a separate wooden base fitted with a detachable carrying handle. The clean, functional design emphasises balance and practicality rather than ornamentation.
This type of lantern was commonly placed along garden paths to guide movement at night and could also be used indoors to provide soft, ambient light in living spaces or tatami rooms.
There are glue residues, scorch marks, and general surface staining consistent with age and use. The wooden base shows visible discolouration, and the paper panels display marks and minor tears. Fair to good used condition. Please refer to the photos for details.
