Description from the seller
An antique Orthodox chest cross / travel icon / crucifix with the Crucified Christ.
Done using the repoussé technique. The front and back are described in Cyrillic.
Such icons were taken by Orthodox believers on their travels.
A cross with three horizontal beams. The upper beam bears a tablet (phylactery) with the inscription that Pilate ordered to be affixed to the cross, indicating the guilt of the condemned: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”
At the top of the cross hangs the 'MANDYLION', i.e., the face of Christ imprinted on a cloth.
At the ends of the transverse upper arm, angels with handkerchiefs in their hands.
The central crossbeam is intended for the hands of the crucified Jesus Christ.
In the center of the composition, Christ is crucified on an eight-pointed cross. The cross, along with the accompanying spear and the sponge, is placed on a depiction of Golgotha with Adam's skull turned to the right.
Lower beam for Christ's feet (Latin: suppedaneum) – pierced by two nails (each leg separately).
One end of the lower beam is raised. That end points toward the sky, to where the Good Thief went, crucified with Christ.
The other end — abandoned — points to hell, a place for the second Evil Thief who did not express remorse.
At the very bottom of the cross, a skull is visible, illustrating the word 'Golgotha' — 'the place of the skull'.
Material: brass, chased casting. On the back of the cross, a prayer.
Origin: Russia, Guslic region, 19th century.
Dimensions: 11 cm x 6.5 cm; weight: 53.7 g
Condition as shown in the photos; real photo.
