Description from the seller
Signed copy by Hans Silvester on the half-title page, unique and unattainable as a signed copy on the internet. 168 pages and about 150 photographs, almost all in color, text in French by Christian Meunier. Green cloth binding and illustrated dust jacket. In excellent condition.
Provence is known worldwide as the land of sun and warmth. Hans Silvester shows it to us well in all seasons, including winter, and this book is devoted to the landscapes of lavender, a beautiful aromatic plant which, when it blooms in summer, colors the landscapes.
Hans Silvester was born in 1938 in Lörrach, Black Forest, Germany, just near Switzerland, and he graduated from the Freiburg School of Photography in 1955. He settled in Provence in the early 1960s while traveling the world, photographing populations in their diversity and publishing many high-quality photographic books. He joined the Rapho agency in 1965. From the 1980s onward, Hans Silvester directed his work toward environmental activism, denouncing the ravages of deforestation in the Amazon, and publishing a long report on a river in Provence under the title "The Murdered River." Hans Silvester is a photographer still active, and over the past years he has produced numerous books on the peoples of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia.
Hans Silvester received the Albert Kahn Planet Prize International in December 2022 for his entire career and for his testimonies of an era spanning from 1960 to the present. “Thanks to his openness to the world, to the acuity of his eye as a photographer and to his sense of beauty, he transmits to us iconic images representing everyday people, witnesses of a culture, a place, a moment… The photographer’s eye freezes a fleeting moment to remind us of what constitutes our history. In this sense, he is at once an artist, a sociologist, a historian, a defender of cultures and of nature through an approach based on trust and observation.” (retourdevoyage.com)
