Pair of antique boxing gloves from the interwar period (c. 1920–1930) manufactured by British maker John Woodbridge & Sons – original, unrestored with natural filling of horsehair or straw-like material, not suitable for modern sport use.
Description from the seller
An exceptional pair of antique boxing gloves from the early era of modern boxing—crafted by a British heritage manufacturer.
John Woodbridge & Sons – Makers Ltd.
These classically laced leather gloves originate from the interwar period (circa 1920–1930), a time when boxing gloves were still handmade and modern padding was unknown. Notably, they retain their original natural filling made of horsehair or straw-like material, a rare feature today and of collectible relevance for early competition and training gloves.
The silhouette is compact and functional, with a cut typical of the pre-World War II era. The leather shows a deeply ingrained patina with visible traces of decades of use—a genuine testament to an era when boxing found its way into the great halls and arenas. The still recognizable manufacturer's mark reinforces its originality and historical classification.
The condition is original and unrestored. No modern repairs, no refinishing—this unadulterated state of preservation is exactly what makes the pair so sought after today. Comparable gloves manufactured in Britain with natural filling are rare on the international collector market and are increasingly valued as high-quality sports memorabilia.
An ideal object for serious collectors, museums, boxing enthusiasts, or as an exclusive display piece with a strong historical presence.
Note: Not suitable for contemporary sporting use. Sold exclusively as a collector's and decorative item.
