Nuumit, also Nuummite, is a rare metamorphic rock composed mainly of the minerals gedrite and anthophyllite. The name derives from the locality Nuuk in Greenland.
The base color is almost black and often iridescent due to inclusions; the rock is opaque. Besides the two amphiboles Gedrite and Anthophyllite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite occur as accessory minerals. The two amphiboles form a twin lamination that originated by exsolution in the solid state and is characterized in polished specimens by a yellowish-golden iridescence.
The originally magmatic rock, formed in the Archaean about 2.8 Ga (billion years ago), was geologically shortly thereafter—around 2.7 Ga and 2.5 Ga—subjected to at least two metamorphic events, and is today classified as ortho-amphibolite.
