Description from the seller
A very special edition about the Belgian Congo from 1929. Part 1 has 286 pages and at the back 5 maps; Part 2 has 284 pages. What makes this particular work so remarkable is the enormous amount of photographs and artistic impressions. This material is of such high quality that the photographic material remains in museum collections to this day. The books offer a breathtaking depiction of the original Congo as it was encountered at the time: very striking landscapes but, above all, remarkable people in all kinds of tribal affiliations. Time has stood still there for centuries, everything is pristine. The condition of the books is good, only the (original) bindings, in themselves very beautiful but fragile, show some wear. In Part 2 the first 4 pages have come loose, but not damaged. All in all a very engaging and fascinating set with unique photographic material that does justice to the people there, and to the country where they live. Part 2 also goes into Congo's art at length.
