The earliest known treatise dedicated exclusively to wigs and hairpieces. The work systematically addresses all aspects of capillamenta: materials, construction, historical origins, and usage in both daily life and theatrical performance. It provides one of the most comprehensive seventeenth-century accounts of hair and its cultural significance, reflecting contemporary fashions, social norms, and technical practices.

Conrad Tiburtius Rango (1639–1700) was a Lutheran theologian and natural historian whose career encompassed teaching, pastoral work, and scholarly publication. Educated at the universities of Jena, Gießen, and Wittenberg, Rango undertook extensive study tours through Germany, Holland, and Brabant, engaging with leading theologians and scholars of his time. From 1663 to 1668, he served as Rector of the Berliner Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster, during which he published De Capillamentis. The treatise reflects his interest in cataloguing and systematising knowledge, a concern consistent with his broader scholarly and pedagogical work.
