Description from the seller
Sculptural Flower Vase in Yakisugi Style – Handcrafted from Rare Akita Cedar
This is a handcrafted wooden flower vase made from Akita Sugi (Akita Cedar), a revered material known for its beautiful grain and fragrant aroma. Akita Sugi is one of Japan's three most renowned types of forest timber, traditionally used in crafts such as Odate Magewappa and Akita Sugi Taru (barrels). The swirling wood grain pattern seen in this piece is highly distinctive and visually striking, a result of the natural growth patterns of this prized cedar. The vase has been carefully hollowed out and features a central hole inside, which indicates that it was originally designed to hold a drop-in flower container (otoshi). However, the otoshi is not included.
This piece is not only a functional flower vase but also a sculptural object that highlights the natural beauty of the material. The undulating outer form retains the organic character of the tree trunk, making it a unique, rustic interior accent.
The black areas of this piece are most likely created using a burning technique known as Yakisugi (charred cedar), followed by surface polishing and finishing. By utilizing the natural differences in the wood’s growth rings, the result is a finish that is rich in both visual and tactile appeal.
