Description from the seller
Unusual Tribal Patchwork Wall Textile with Cowrie Shells, Anatolia / Caucasus
Description:
This unusual wall-hanging textile is composed of multiple older handwoven fragments assembled using a traditional patchwork technique. The piece combines coarse hand-spun wool panels with kilim-woven sections and textile borders, forming a vertically oriented decorative object intended for wall display.
Decorative elements include cowrie shells, glass beads, buttons, and wool tassels, all hand-attached. The irregular geometry, visible hand stitching, and varied textile textures indicate a vernacular, non-industrial origin. The piece was not intended for floor use and should be understood as a decorative or symbolic textile object rather than a rug.
Based on weaving techniques, materials, and visible wear, the individual textile fragments are attributable to the late 19th to early 20th century Anatolia / Caucasus region. The current patchwork form appears to have been assembled later, likely in the mid-20th century, reusing older woven elements. Such textiles are often associated with protective, ritual, or memory-related functions and were typically displayed on walls rather than used domestically.
Dimension:
Length: 72 cm
Width: 16 cm
Condition:
Good condition considering age and handmade nature.
