Pakistan Baluch Afghan hand-knotted wool on cotton carpet, 155 × 91 cm, approx. 160,000 knots per m², pile height 8 mm, 21st century, professionally cleaned, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Pile: Wolle
Warp & Weft: 100% cotton
Quality: hand-knotted
Knot density: approx. 160,000 / m²
Pile height: 8 mm
Origin: Afghanistan
The Baluch carpets (also Belutsch) come from a nomadic people in the Baluchistan region, a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They rely on farming, carpet production, and sheep, goat, and camel husbandry. Traditionally, the carpets are made from sheep wool or goat hair from the tribes’ own herds. Due to their tribal origin, the carpets are generally smaller because of the high transport requirements, feature geometric patterns or stylized floral motifs, and are hand-knotted. The classic dark red, brown, or blue backgrounds are often contrasted with lively patterns in white, ivory, yellow, or orange tones. Baluch carpets are comparatively thin, yet quite densely woven, which makes them soft and flexible. Perfect for daily use and with a lot of movement. Even today, these carpets still offer excellent value for money as well as outstanding durability.
