Baluch Afghan from Pakistan, 149 × 83 cm, wool on cotton, hand-knotted, 21st century, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
Pile: % Wool
Weft & Warp: 100% cotton
Quality: hand-knotted
Knot density: approx. 160,000 per m²
Pile height: 8 mm
Origin: Afghanistan
The Baluch carpets (also Belutsch) originate from a nomadic people from the Baluchistan region, a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. They live from agriculture, carpet production, as well as sheep, goat, and camel husbandry. Traditionally the carpets are made from sheep wool or goat hair from the tribes’ own herds. Due to their tribal origin, the carpets are usually smaller because of the high transport needs, feature geometric patterns or stylized floral motifs, and are hand-knotted. The classic dark red, brown, or blue backgrounds are often contrasted with vivid patterns in white, ivory, yellow, or orange tones. Baluch carpets are comparatively thin, yet rather densely woven, which makes them soft and flexible. Perfect for daily use and much movement. Even today these carpets still offer excellent value for money as well as outstanding durability.
