Indian Sitar – Haribhau Vishwanath – Bombay, ca. 1950–1970



Description:

A finely crafted Indian sitar made by Haribhau Vishwanath Co., one of the most respected instrument makers in Bombay, active since 1925. This piece dates to approx. 1950–1970 and showcases outstanding workmanship with authentic materials.



Features:
• Large, rounded wooden gourd resonator with deep reddish-brown lacquer and carved floral decoration
• 7 main playing strings and 11 sympathetic strings, attached to hand-carved wooden tuning pegs
• Arched metal frets, traditionally tied with fiber
• Genuine bone inlays with finely engraved floral patterns across the headstock, neck, and body
• A beautifully preserved main bridge carved from natural bone
• Original builder’s plaque: Haribhau Vishwanath Co. – Head Office: Dadar, Bombay–28
• Includes 2 traditional metal finger picks (mezrabs) with red and green protective plastic tips

Some strings are missing or loose, as visible in the photos. This does not affect the instrument’s structure or authenticity. Restringing is recommended if intended for musical use.

No carrying case included.

A comparable instrument is preserved in the Swedish Museum of World Culture (Inventory No. SMVK-OM-Objekt-162587), reflecting the artistic value and cultural heritage of this maker.
