Description from the seller
WMF Art Nouveau centerpiece – Naturalistic walnut composition
Exceptional Art Nouveau coffee table in silvered metal (silvered brass), made by the famous Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF), one of Europe’s most prestigious manufacturers at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, renowned for the excellence of its metal art creations and the quality of its collaborations with the leading designers of the era.
This work stands out for a sculptural composition of remarkable naturalism, depicting an opened walnut split into two shells, treated as two generous basins with surfaces subtly hammered, evoking the organic texture of the fruit. From their junction rises a finely chiselled walnut branch, unfolding leaves and ramifications with a precision and sensitivity characteristic of the vegetal language of Art Nouveau.
The vertical arc of the central stem, balanced by the horizontal alignment of the two cuts, gives the ensemble an elegant and perfectly controlled dynamic. The basins rest on small, discreet feet, emphasizing visual lightness and highlighting the mastery of volumes and proportions—the signature of WMF craftsmanship.
The piece is signed 'WMF' at the base of the stem, confirming its authenticity. It features a beautiful antique patina, rich and nuanced, which highlights the reliefs, the veins of the leaves and the metalwork, while showing an excellent state of preservation, with no deformation or visible restoration.
Dimensions :
– Height: 26 cm
– Width: 34.5 cm
– Depth: 19 cm
A true manifesto piece of Art Nouveau, this centerpiece blends decorative function with sculptural ambition. It stands out as a top-tier collectible object, perfectly at home in a collection of major decorative arts, a museum display, or an exceptional interior seeking an emblematic work that is both poetic and architectural.
