Antique flax hackle from the Netherlands, dating to about 1850–1900, made of solid wood with iron pins, in Arts & Crafts style, dimensions 64 x 6 x 12.5 cm and weight 1.6 kg, showing used condition with patina.
Description from the seller
Authentic antique flax hackle, an essential tool in the traditional processing of flax into linen.
This object was used during heckling: combing flax fibers to remove wood debris and short fibers, so that fine, long fibers remained for spinning linen yarn.
The flax fork consists of a solid wooden support in which a dense array of long, hand-forged iron pins is placed.
The pens are firmly anchored and show clear signs of heavy use.
The wooden base features incised decorative motifs and hanging holes, indicating both functional utility and artisanal craftsmanship.
This type of tool was indispensable in farms and cottage industries in Europe until the industrialization of textile production.
Nowadays a flax hackle is a rare and decorative historical object, loved by collectors of agricultural heritage, folk art, and textile history.
Symbolic and historical significance
The flax hackle stands as a symbol of home crafts, self-sufficiency, and artisanal knowledge, and marks a crucial step in the chain from flax to linen, one of the oldest textile materials in the world.

Strong patina, wear on the wood, and oxidation on the iron pins, fully in line with age and historical use.
