Description from the seller

Artist: The poster is signed Erich Erler (signature "Erler" visible at the bottom left). Erich Erler (1870–1946) was a German painter and illustrator, a member of the Munich Secession.

• Title/Subject: The text at the top reads 'Der 9te Pfeil' (The 9th Arrow). It is a metaphor for the ninth German war loan.

• Slogan: At the bottom, it reads 'subscribe to war bonds' (subscribe to the war loan).

• Printer: The inscription “KVNSTANSTALT O. CONSEE MVNCHEN” (Kunstanstalt O. Consée, Munich) identifies the renowned art printer that produced the document.

Historical Context

This poster was published in 1918. At that time, the German Empire was issuing war bonds to finance its military operations. The number "9" corresponds to the penultimate fundraising campaign before the end of the conflict in November 1918. Great War, WWI, WW1

Iconography Analysis

• The Archer: The man is portrayed in a heroic, muscular, and almost antique manner. The choice of the archer symbolizes precision and strength. Unlike images of war showing trenches or modern weapons, Erler here uses a classical and timeless symbolism to inspire patriotic duty.

• Colors and Style: The style is characteristic of late Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau), with pronounced outlines and flat areas of muted colors (ochre yellow, gray-green).

• Dimensions : Based on your photos with the measuring tape, the poster appears to measure approximately 71 cm in height by 46 cm in width, which corresponds to the standard formats of propaganda posters from that period.

State of conservation

• The paper: it shows a natural yellow patina, humidity stains (rust marks) and fragility visible along the edges. There are missing parts and tears on the two upper corners.

• Creases: The cross-fold crease marks (dividing the poster into four) are typical of documents that have been stored folded for decades.

• The back: The reverse side of the poster shows ink absorption and paper aging consistent with a lithographic or offset print from the early 20th century.

This is an original copy of a propaganda poster by Erich Erler for the German Ninth War Loan (1918). It is an interesting historical collectible item. Guaranteed authentic. Stored by the family since the war.

Delivery: poster folded in the package
