Description from the seller

Rare bronze statue by Joep Coppens, signed JC 94. Stands 22 cm tall on a small black marble base; it is in good condition (see photos). A magnificent work of art by a Dutch artist born in 1940 and who died in 2024, renowned in the Netherlands and internationally for his bronze sculptures with a timeless style.

Toward the end of the 1950s, he began producing his sculptures, after a year of study at the Eindhoven Academy of Industrial Design, training at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht with the sculptor Fred Carasso, and workshop studies at Atelier ’63 with Wessel Couzijn. He draws inspiration from the organic forms of nature. He creates figurative and abstract sculptures, mainly in bronze, and always imbued with deep symbolism.

A larger version of this statue in bronze can be found at the Convent of the Franciscan Sisters in Veghel. Coppens created it for the 150th anniversary of the congregation.
