Les masques blancs du Sud Gabon sont devenus l'une des images emblématiques des arts africains au XIXe siècle . La cohérence de leur corpus, très riche, a défié diverses tentatives de classification, que ce soit selon leurs variations iconographiques ou à travers les groupes étroitement apparentés (Punu, Lumbu, Shira, Sangu, Tsengi, etc.) qui, encore aujourd'hui, partagent leur tradition. L'esthétique offre une autre voie à leur étude. Au-delà de l'appréciation occidentale, elle se fonde sur l'essence même de ces masques, dont l'inspiration et la réception procèdent autant de la beauté que de la virtuosité. Ce masque se situe au sommet d'une tradition où les notions religieuses et profanes du sacré s'unissent dans l'exaltation de la beauté.
