The Unsung Hero of the Battle of Britain Whilst the Supermarine Spitfire became the icon of the Battle of Britain, the Hawker Hurricane actually accounted for a higher number of enemy aircraft shot down; around 60 to 65 percent. They were the backbone of RAF Fighter Command at the time, having been manufactured in greater numbers than the Spitfire, and having entered into service a year earlier. Although the slightly slower aircraft, the Hurricane was robustly constructed, easy to maintain, and carried impressive firepower.
