Gaston Sébire (1920–2001) remains one of the great figures of French figurative painting of the 20th century. Born in Saint-Samson, in Normandy, he develops very early a keen sensitivity to the light and to the landscapes of his region. After studies at the Maîtrise Saint‑Evode of Rouen, he works at night for the PTT so that he can paint by day, before his first exhibitions in 1944. His settling in Paris in 1951 marks a decisive turning point: the Visconti, Charpentier, or Drouant galleries quickly recognize his talent, and prestigious prizes follow, including the Prix de la Critique and the Prix Casa Velázquez.
Independent painter, faithful to a luminous and sensitive depiction, Sébire asserts himself with his Norman landscapes, vibrant seascapes, silent snows, and sumptuous bouquets. His mastery of color and light lends each canvas an atmosphere that is both poetic and timeless. In 1975, he becomes Official Painter of the Navy, affirming his deep connection with the shores and ports of France.
Today, Gaston Sébire's works captivate collectors and enthusiasts with their elegance, emotional depth, and ability to capture the soul of landscapes. Featured in numerous private and museum collections, he remains a reliable value on the art market, sought after for the consistent quality of his work and the beauty of his compositions.
