Iron Meteorite Gebel Kamil (Ataxite) - 38.2 g - Exceptional Desert Patina
General Description:
Up for auction is a beautiful, authentic specimen of the Gebel Kamil iron meteorite. This meteorite was discovered in the East Uweinat Desert of Egypt, near the famous Kamil Crater. Gebel Kamil is a legendary find (first discovered in 2009) and is classified as an Ungrouped Iron (Ataxite).
Specimen Details:
This particular piece weighs 38.2 grams and exhibits a fantastic, natural desert-varnished surface with a deep brown-black patina. The texture is rugged and characteristic of the shrapnel-like fragments found around the impact site. It has a high nickel content (typical for Ataxites) and is strongly magnetic.
Type: Iron, Ungrouped (Ataxite)
Location: Gebel Kamil, Egypt
Weight: 38.2 grams
Condition: Natural, uncleaned, high-quality specimen.
The Discovery:
The Kamil Crater is one of the best-preserved small impact craters on Earth, estimated to be less than 5,000 years old. Most of the meteorite material found consists of these sharp-edged "shrapnel" fragments, created by the massive explosion upon impact.
