Arthur Van Hecke (1924 – 2003)
Arthur Van Hecke belongs to this lineage of Northern painters whose sensibility was forged in the light of Flanders and the harshness of industrial landscapes. Born in Roubaix in 1924, raised between the workers’ courtyards and regular stays in Bruges, he discovers painting very early by copying the Flemish masters. At twelve, he already paints with passion; at thirteen, he works in a factory, never abandoning the brushes.
Having served with the Free French forces during World War II, he returns to civilian life with the resolve to devote himself fully to art. His decisive encounter in 1948 with collector Roger Dutilleul and industrialist Jean Masurel opened this path for him: they recognized his talent, encouraged him, and enabled him to paint full-time.
A member of the Roubaix Group, Van Hecke develops a vibrant body of work built around color and matter. Portraits, seascapes, bouquets, the landscapes of the North: each canvas bears witness to an almost musical energy, a dense and generous brushwork that makes light burst forth. His style, nourished by his Flemish roots and the influence of the painters of Laethem-Saint-Martin, combines expressive power with a keen sense of composition.
Today, his works are held in numerous public collections, notably in Dunkirk, Lille, Roubaix, Paris, and Villeneuve-d’Ascq, confirming the unique position of Arthur Van Hecke in 20th-century French painting.
