Oil on cardboard. Signed and dated 1895.
On the reverse is a handwritten inscription by the author: "to my dear niece D. Luísa Lambert Pinto, Off.e and D.ca the author, Luiz Ascêncio Tomasini."
Lisbon, February 10, 1900. Frame in wood and plaster, gilded in fine gold. Dimensions: 21.5 x 16 cm.
Biographical information
He was born in Lisbon on August 15, 1823, in the parish of Conceição Nova. He was a ship captain and, as such, undertook many voyages, but when he left maritime life, he devoted himself to painting, learning from his great friend Tomás da Anunciação, becoming a marine painter.
Viterbo, who met him, describes him as 'short, thin, but lively, nervous' [1].
In seascape painting, he was a rival of the artist Pedroso.
Career
In 1879 he served as commander of the steamship Maria Pia, which carried to Rio de Janeiro the goods from the Portuguese Exposition.
Other information
He received the following decorations and honorary titles: the Habit of Saint James, the Commander of Isabella the Catholic, the Habit of Charles III.
He was an Academician of Merit of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Lisbon, received a silver medal from the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Portugal, and a Copper Medal from the Portuguese Exposition in Rio de Janeiro.
