Antique Dutch table globe dating to circa 1900, built from paper segments on a plaster sphere mounted on a dark turned wooden base with a brass and copper meridian ring, measuring about 50 cm high by 35 cm in diameter, in reasonable condition with possible small parts missing.
Description from the seller
Title suggestion: Rare Dutch table globe – J. Smulders / W.J. Geerling (Jan Felkl) – ca. 1880
Description: Offered at auction: A beautifully preserved antique desk globe from a Dutch brokerage, issued by J. Smulders & Co. (The Hague) and prepared by the well-known geographer W.J. Geerling.
This globe is a fascinating time document from the late 19th century (circa 1875–1885). The cartography is by the famous globe-maker Jan Felkl (Prague/Rostok), who was known for his high quality and scientific accuracy. It doesn't turn very smoothly, it runs a bit stiff.
Key historical features:
North America: Canada is still labeled as 'British North America', a term that remained on maps shortly after the formation of the Dominion (1867).
Africa: Central Africa still shows large white spots ("Unknown lands"), indicating a period just before or during the great explorations of Stanley and Livingstone and the partition of Africa (Berlin Conference, 1884).
Dutch Edition: The globe is entirely in Dutch, which makes these copies particularly sought after in the Low Countries.
Specifications
Maker: Jan Felkl / W.J. Geerling
Publisher: J. Smulders & Co, The Hague
Period: approx. 1880
Construction: Paper strips (segments) on a plaster sphere, presumably mounted on a nicely turned black-lacquered wooden base with a brass/copper meridian ring.
Condition: The globe is in good, original condition with a beautiful patina. There are signs of age visible (stains and light discoloration), which give character to the object. No major damage or missing parts to the map.
A rare opportunity for collectors of cartography, globes, and 19th-century antiques.
