Description from the seller
Werra 1 – minimalist German 35mm camera (1950s)
The Werra 1 is a distinctive and iconic 35mm rangefinder camera, produced in the early 1950s by Carl Zeiss Jena in the former GDR. The Werra series is known for its strikingly minimalist design, which stands in sharp contrast to the more traditional cameras of that period.
The Werra 1 uses 35mm film and is fully mechanically built. Characteristic is the cylindrical housing and the integrated lens protection, which also serves as a lens hood. The design is functional, sleek and timeless, and is often regarded as an early example of industrial design in photography.
This camera was supplied standard with a fixed Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm lens (aperture depending on version). The Tessar lens is known for its sharpness and high-contrast rendering and has contributed to the reputation of the Werra cameras.
The controls are unusual but well thought out: focusing and exposure are adjusted via rings on the front, which gives the camera a unique character. Thanks to its compact size and sturdy metal construction, the Werra 1 was popular with travelers and hobbyists at the time.
Condition
Vintage condition, appropriate for its age.
Mechanism not fully functioning; you can load the camera and shoot, but the shutter doesn't seem to open fully. The diaphragm still works fine.
