Gioseffo Petrucci presents Prodomo apologetico alli studi Chircheriani, a first edition (1677) in Italian, published by Janssonius van Waesberge, with about 200 pages, a parchment binding, gilt spine label, and many woodcut initials, title decoration, engravings and seven of nine folded plates, dedicated to his master Athanasius Kircher.
Description from the seller
PETRUCCI, Gioseffo (d. 1680) - An Apologetic Introduction to Gercherian Studies. Amsterdam: Janssonius van Waesberge, 1677.
First edition of this apologetic treatise, which Petrucci, a pupil of Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), dedicates to his master. Indeed, Kircher's works attracted numerous criticisms starting in the 1670s, particularly from Protestant skeptics. Therefore, Petrucci portrays him here as a judicious experimentalist who weighed all the evidence carefully before drawing conclusions, highlighting Kircher's skepticism toward natural phenomena and presenting him as the legitimate heir of Galileo.
format (223 x 174 mm). Woodcut decoration on the title, woodcut initials, illustrations and 7 (out of 9) engraved plates (the title engraved on the frontispiece is missing, slightly shorter on the outer margin, some cards slightly cut, two folding plates with tears touching the engraving, occasional small foxing). Late parchment, gold title on the spine label, edges stained (some loss to the label, edges faded, some signs of wear).
Provenance: Dr. Morris Fishbein Collection - The University of Chicago (ex libris and deaccession stamp) - Maurizio Petta (ex libris).
