The DeVry Corporation was founded in 1913 by Herman Adolf DeVry (1876-1941), an inventor and aviator. DeVry is credited with the creation of the first portable film projector, which he called the Theatre in a Suitcase. Herman DeVry, born in 1876 in the German region of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, arrived with his family in the United States at age ten and disembarked in New York Harbor in the summer of 1886. The young Herman was quickly fascinated by the new and emerging film technology – beginning with the first films of Louis Le Prince in 1888 and then Edison’s kinetoscopes, which were shown at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, where the DeVry working family was based.
This set weighs 13.9 kg and is a wonderful addition to any vintage film collection or as room decoration.
