It brings together Ken Kaiko’s dispatches from February 1965 and a powerful body of photographs by staff photographer Keiichi Akimoto, conveying on-the-ground tension and human expression. Contemporary accounts noted that some 200 war correspondents were active and only a small fraction returned, a severity reflected in these pages. Regarded as a classic of reportage, Kaiko narrowly escaped death during this assignment. Accompanying him, Akimoto produced one of his defining series, recording in detail the harrowing execution of a Vietnamese high-school student.
