The prince/the sovereign (Italian title: Il principe) appeared for the first time in 1532. The book contains advice for princes on how they should govern their state. The principal occupation of the prince, according to him, was to acquire, consolidate, and maintain his power. Machiavelli was at the time seeking a nuovo principe (new prince) to drive out the foreigners and unite Italy. He would come to be known for amoral power politics based on (military) force.
