Nalini Malani (born 1946 in Karachi, today Pakistan) is an internationally renowned Indian artist and one of the most important voices in contemporary feminist and politically engaged art. She lives and works in Mumbai. Her multifaceted work includes painting, drawing, video, animation, shadow play, installation, and large-scale media works.
At the center of Malani's art are themes such as violence, memory, migration, colonial history, mythology, and female identity. She is especially known for her immersive video and shadow installations, in which she combines literary, historical, and mythological references from Western and South Asian cultures. Her work is characterized by expressive imagery and a clear social critique.
Nalini Malani has participated in numerous international exhibitions and biennials, including documenta and the Venice Biennale. Her works are part of major museum and private collections worldwide and are considered central to the development of postcolonial, feminist, and media art practices since the 1990s.
