Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911; from a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that pushed him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years completing philosophical studies, before dedicating himself, as a self-taught artist, to artistic research, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.
A man of faith, he believes that only through art can the divine be reached. And this belief underpins all his work: "I try to make emptiness – Gentilini declared – This emptiness provokes a certain catharsis in me: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reevaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the sign never thought." He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, that of the human and that of the aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
