Gédéon chef de brigands by Benjamin Rabier, in‑4, Paris, Garnier, 1931, first edition, French, 48 pages, fully illustrated in colour by Rabier, with illustrated boards and red cloth spine, condition Bon with back moisture and slightly warped boards but solid hinge and clean interior.
Description from the seller
A fine quarto album that will delight Rabier's admirers, entirely illustrated by the artist across all 48 pages that comprise the work (Rabier's drawings reproduced in color within the text).
Publisher's binding illustrated by Benjamin Rabier in color on the boards, spine in red cloth, unlettered.
Cardboard binding in fairly good condition, defects: moisture stain on the back and the cover paper slightly warped. Corners and edges of the covers perforated in places. Hinge solid. Interior in very good condition, paper yellowed as usual, but clean (no children's doodling).
Even before Carl Barks' Uncle Scrooge existed, there was another duck known for his restlessness. His name? Gideon.
Benjamin Rabier (1864-1939) is regarded as one of the greatest European animal illustrators. Rabier's world is filled with animals. In 1906, Benjamin Rabier published with Jules Tallandier an entirely illustrated edition of La Fontaine's Fables. He also illustrated the Roman de Renart and Buffon’s Histoire naturelle. In 1921, Léon Bel was inspired by a drawing by Benjamin Rabier to use as the logo for his brand La vache qui rit. [...] But his most famous comic character remains Gédéon the duck, whose stories were published between 1923 and 1939 in 16 albums. He also drew the famous whale of Salins du Midi.
