Description from the seller
Giuseppe Gabani (Senigallia, July 27, 1846 – Rome, October 12, 1899)
Oil on board, depicted on an ancient tablet, essentially part of an old palette (the only work measures a maximum of 195x150 mm) representing a resting mule from the Italian army. Framed in the period of the famous Giosi firm from via Margutta in Rome. It is likely a study or a sketch for a larger work. The painter was, in fact, a Cavalry Officer, participated in the Third War of Independence, in the IV Regiment of Cavalry from Genoa, and in the military campaign of 1870. An Orientalist and battle painter, he gained recognition for his equestrian scenes within the context of late 19th-century Roman painting.
The Gallery of Modern Art of Rome Capital houses its canvas 'Memory of June 24, 1866', depicting an episode from the Battle of Custoza. It was exhibited in 1890 at the exhibition of Amateurs and Cultors of Rome and was purchased by the Municipality of Rome. On the same subject, Giuseppe Gabani painted two other canvases: 'Count Barattieri of San Pietro, leading his regiment on June 24, 1866', which are now located at the Historical Museum of the Cavalry in Pinerolo and at the Cavalry Officers' Club in Codroipo.
