Oil on panel titled “Batalla Naval” by a French School (19th century) from France, depicting a marine landscape, unsigned, in good condition, 68 × 100 cm, with frame.
Description from the seller
Oil on board 'Naval Battle' Marine painting, 19th century – France
Magnificent work in oil on panel belonging to an exquisite French collection. It retains its original gilded wooden frame with gold leaf. The scene depicts a maritime scene of great pictorial and chromatic strength, as a naval battle has been rendered with remarkable detail. The composition has two main focal points, with the left side showing cannons still emitting smoke, while the opposite side appears destroyed with active fires. In the foreground, some shipwrecked people navigate a small boat. The technique is meticulous, with very fine brushwork, and the composition is balanced. The composition aligns with the narrative sense of the painting. The patina corresponds with its age.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that all the museums in the world can contribute their more or less brilliant examples: battles, shipwrecks, boarding actions, pirates, and heroic ships. The production surrounding this entire naval epic has been for centuries one of the foundations of national dignity and the art business.
