Antique chest of drawers in Transitions style between Louis XV and Louis XVI, circa 1850–1900, in wood with a marble top, France.
Description from the seller
Commode in Transition Style Louis XV and Louis XVI, Napoleonic era, circa 1900 – France
Exquisite commode in the Transitional style between Louis XV and Louis XVI, made around 1900 in France, during the Napoleon III era. It features an impressive marble top resting on a structure with a mixtilinear profile and two spacious drawers, with twin round, chiselled pulls, in addition to the central lock. The piece rises on carved legs, the two front ones with sabots, and is finished with a small apron. However, this item stands out for its marquetry; different fruits woods are used, contributing a richly varied tonal spectrum to the pattern, with a Renaissance inclination, resembling musical instruments. Finely drawn lines typical of the period, a commode of the highest quality, deserving a place of honor in the home.
Transitional Style
Executed in the style of the transitional period between Louis XV and Louis XVI. During this period, features of both styles were blended, as seen in this piece. Louis XV is identified with Rococo, including a more lavish and detailed decoration, while Louis XVI contrasts with the former through its simplicity, which again embraces the rigor of geometric forms and straight lines, an inspiration drawn directly from classical architecture. It is characterized by lightness, harmony, and proportion, setting aside the heaviness and excess of the styles that follow. It stands as a more discreet and elegant style.

Materials: Wood and marble top
Period: Napoleon III Era, circa 1900
Country of origin: France
