Description from the seller
Zoomorphic jug 'Duck' – Manufacture de Saint-Clément – polychrome barbotine – Signed – France, 20th century
A polychrome slip-decorated ceramic pitcher depicting a stylized duck, produced by the Saint-Clément manufactory.
An iconic example of mid-20th-century French animal ceramics, combining utilitarian function with decorative sculptural treatment.
The piece features a fully three-dimensional sculpture, with a long slender neck and an open beak forming the spout.
The nuanced polychromy (greens, blues, browns and ochres) is applied beneath a glossy glaze, revealing meticulous work on the relief and the textures of the plumage.
The handle is integrated into the body of the animal, in a style typical of Saint-Clément productions from that period.
Factory: Saint-Clément
Origin: France
Subject: Duck
Technique: slip decoration, polychrome glazing
Signature: recessed signature beneath the base
Era: around 1930–1950
Condition: very good overall; no cracks, chips, or signs of restoration observed (see photographs)
A sought-after decorative piece, representative of Saint-Clément's craftsmanship and of the 20th century's fascination with expressive animal forms. Suitable for both a collector and a vintage or eclectic interior.
