AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

MANESSON MALLET (Allain)

The Work of Mars. Or new fortress-building, as well-regulated as unregulated.

Divided into three fucking parts.

The first teaches the building of regular fortifications, fortresses and outworks, whether on paper or in the field, with the drawing of all sorts of flat terrains, and the strengthening of enclosed towns; founded in plains, in valleys, on hills, in marshes; surrounded by pools, standing waters, and rivers; or situated by the sea.

The second gives various building rules to fortify all sorts of Cities, according to ERRARD, MÁROILOIS, FRITACH, STEVYN, DOGEN, SARDY, DEVILLE, FABER; and the Graef van PAGAN, and makes comparison between their fortifications, and those of the Author.

The last part shows the materials used for erecting walls, ramparts, and hornworks: it explains the means to defend them; it gives the method of laying siege, bombarding towns, making breaches, for storming the fortress; and it deals with organizing an army, with new provisioning and practicing.

By ALLAIN MANASSON MALLET, from Paris, Field and Army Surveyor of the King of Portugal, named Sergeant Major of His Artillery in the Province of Alentejo.

Translated from French.

To Amsterdam,
By Jacob van Meurs, Bookseller and Plate-Cutter.

It was part of Vauban's library, and Pierre Bayle stated that it was highly valued by the most learned men in this field.
