Since the traditional meal is eaten with fingers, these spoons, often decorated, serve a purpose other than preparing or consuming the meal.

In the Congo, these richly ornate or carved spoons are used at village festivals, where a village woman known for her hospitality and generosity is celebrated.

It is to this woman that the village chief asks to organize the ceremonial meals, which often have very many participants.

She will use it to distribute the rice and meat, sometimes brandishing it in the "dance of the hospital woman." She hardly shows any signs of use.
