Description from the seller
Elegant and rare English egg stand (Egg Cruet) from the late Victorian era, made circa 1860–1880 in Old Sheffield Plate (rolled silver on copper).
The ensemble consists of a round stand with a gallery-style rim, a central carrying handle, and four removable egg cups. The high-quality workmanship, the classic design, and the substantial weight point to an early, high-quality manufacture produced before the spread of electroplated nickel silver (EPNS).
Special detail:
In the upper section there are openings designed to hold egg spoons. These were historically made of mother-of-pearl, since silver in contact with eggs is known to develop an unpleasant metallic taste. This functional detail underscores the refined dining culture of the 19th century.
Punches / markings:
Maker's mark 'JFP & Co' as well as several symbolic assay and workshop marks, typical of English Sheffield Plate works of the 19th century. No Sterling punches, in keeping with the marking practices of the time for Old Sheffield Plate.
Material
Old Sheffield Plate (silver on copper, not galvanic)
Total weight (including egg cup): approx. 981 grams
state
Good, age-appropriate condition with visible patina, light signs of use, and age-related wear that emphasize the piece's authenticity. No major damage, stable and complete.
