Description from the seller

Late 19th Century Hand-Hammered Brass Coal Scuttle with Swing Handle

This striking antique brass coal scuttle exemplifies late 19th-century craftsmanship, combining functional design with strong decorative appeal. Its generous proportions, warm golden patina, and sculptural form make it both a practical fireside accessory and a refined decorative object.

The scuttle features a hand-hammered brass body with an elegant curved silhouette, a shaped pouring lip, and a sturdy swing handle mounted on riveted brackets. A secondary fixed handle at the rear enhances usability. The hammered surface reflects light beautifully, revealing deep golden tones accented by darker areas of natural oxidation that testify to its age and authenticity.

Originating from Europe, most likely France or England, and dating to the late 1800s, this piece was traditionally used for storing and pouring coal or wood by the fireplace. A stamped maker’s mark “NT” is visible on the body, supporting its period authenticity and artisanal manufacture.

Crafted entirely from solid brass, the scuttle demonstrates excellent durability and traditional metalworking techniques. It remains structurally sound, with wear, surface scratches, and oxidation consistent with age and use, all of which enhance its character rather than detract from it.

Dimensions: Height 27 cm (10.6 in), Length 24 cm (9.4 in), Depth 21 cm (8.3 in).

Highly decorative and increasingly sought after, this antique coal scuttle is ideal for collectors of fireplace antiques, interior designers, or anyone looking to add a genuine period accent to a classic or eclectic interior.
