AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Pair of 19th-century trumpet-shaped vases, made by the Pétrus Regout manufactory in Maastricht, one of the great European industrial earthenware factories of the second half of the century. These monumental vases, perfectly matched, testify to the historicist and Japonisme tastes then in vogue, while illustrating the technical and decorative mastery achieved by the factory at that time. Their presence is immediately striking, both in their slender proportions and in the richness of their polychrome decoration.

Each vase adopts an elegant, well-balanced silhouette: a slightly flared circular base provides a stable seating, topped by a stout body that gradually tapers toward a long, trumpet-open neck. The upper edge, widely flared, is punctuated by a decorative frieze that accompanies the opening. The designs are printed and then enhanced by hand: figurative cartouches alternate with ornamental reserves of stylized foliage, latticework, and geometric motifs. The scenes, inspired by Far Eastern aesthetics, depict landscapes, architectures, birds, and flowers, treated in a rich palette mixing greens, blues, ochres, pinks, and blacks. Some colors show subtle metallic reflections, almost iridescent, characteristic of Regout production and particularly sensitive to light, lending depth and sophistication to the whole.

The condition is remarkable for pieces from this period. The two vases are in overall perfect condition, with no chips or restorations. Only a very slight loss of material is noted on the upper rim of one of the vases, a defect caused by a firing hair, discreet and with no impact on readability or the object's solidity. Each bears beneath the base the factory mark as well as a relief mark, in the shape of a diamond, with the letter 'R' at the center, an emblematic mark of Pétrus Regout, confirming the authenticity and dating of the set.

Founded in Maastricht at the beginning of the 19th century, the Pétrus Regout manufactory quickly established itself as a major player in European faience, combining industrial production with artistic ambition. In the second half of the century, it developed a wide decorative repertoire inspired both by historical styles and by Orientalism, then highly sought after, while innovating with textures and colors, notably these accents with distinctive metallic sheen. This pair of vases fully fits into this trajectory: it illustrates the factory's technical know-how, its openness to international influences, and its ability to produce decorative objects of high quality intended to adorn the bourgeois interiors of the period.

The average dimensions are:
- Height: 33.5 centimeters,
- Upper diameter: 19.2 centimeters,
- Base diameter: 11.4 centimeters,
- Total weight of the set: 3100 grams.

Each of the two vases will be packaged individually, and the set will be shipped quickly and securely. Local pickup and combined delivery are available. The photos are part of the description.
