Description from the seller

Charming illustrated edition in its magnificent binding of this historical biography devoted to King Louis IX, a major figure of the French Middle Ages, canonized in 1297 and who became the embodiment of the ideal Christian sovereign -

The author, a renowned historian and member of the Académie française, recounts with erudition the life of the monarch, from his devout childhood and accession to the throne to his major political and religious undertakings, notably the Crusades that marked his reign -

The work highlights the personality of Saint Louis, his keen sense of justice, his exemplary piety, and his role in the consolidation of royal power, while emphasizing the importance of his actions in the evolution of French institutions -

This text, both biographical and apologetic, provides a valuable testimony on the reception of Saint Louis in the 19th century, a time when national history fed on exemplary figures to reinforce collective identity -

H. Wallon - St. Louis - 1880 - Alfred Mame and Sons -
572 Pages.

Very good condition of the binding, volume in red half-leather binding illustrated for the edition, light wear marks, corners worn, beautiful gilded edges, spine with raised bands nicely decorated, title and author’s name gilded, superb motifs and gilded ornaments on the boards, black and gold fillets framing the boards.

Good interior condition, some foxing, pretty borders in the form of illustrations, charming initial letters, decorative tailpieces, the work enriched with fine engravings in black and chromolithographs outside the text, including maps, blue endpapers in good condition nicely illustrated with gold fleurs-de-lis.
